Electric cars are no longer an exception on long journeys; but unlike gasoline vehicles, the heart of the trip doesn't beat on the route — it beats at the charging stops. A well-planned route lets you take breaks where you have to, while a poorly planned journey leaves you waiting in line at a rest stop. This guide brings together the planning steps for first-time long-distance drivers, from range calculation to Plan B scenarios.

Calculate your range accurately: look at realistic figures, not the dashboard

The first step of planning is honestly accepting how many kilometers your vehicle needs between charges. WLTP range is measured under laboratory conditions; it does not hold true at highway speeds. ChargeMate's suggested practical formula is this: take 75% of the WLTP range as the real range, and consider only 60% of that (that is, the 20-80% charge range) as usable.

This is not abstract math. In a vehicle with a 400 km WLTP range, about 180 km of usable range remains per stop. The logic behind the 20-80% rule is also simple: above 80%, charging speed drops dramatically; filling the last 20% can take almost as long as filling the first 60%. Dropping below 20% increases the risk of being stranded. Also keep in mind what else affects range: fast driving, hilly roads, wind, vehicle load, and weather conditions must be factored directly into the calculation.

How many stops does your route require?

If you depart home at 100% charge, Turkey's popular routes paint a picture like this (for vehicles with 400 km and 550 km WLTP ranges):

  • Istanbul-Ankara (~450 km): 1 stop at 400 km range; no stops at 550 km range.
  • Istanbul-Izmir (~480 km): 1 stop at 400 km range; no stops or 1 short break at 550 km range.
  • Istanbul-Antalya (~700 km): 2 stops in exchange for 3 stops.
  • Istanbul-Bodrum (~710 km) and Ankara-Trabzon (~735 km): 3 stops at 400 km range; 2 stops at 550 km range.

In winter or with the vehicle fully loaded, consider adding a stop to every route. As much as the number of stops, the duration of stops matters too: while a break at a station with HPC above 150 kW takes 25-30 minutes, at a 60-100 kW unit this time extends to 40-50 minutes. On a three-stop journey, this difference amounts to a total of 1.5-2.5 hours. Let's also add that AC charging is not practical on the highway: while 11 kW AC adds about 60 km of range per hour, DC charging provides about 300 km in the same time. AC works for overnight stays; not on the highway.

Route apps: don't rely on a single source

The right tools draw the right route. Here are the main options you can use in Turkey and their strengths:

  • ABRP (A Better Routeplanner): Takes battery condition and weather conditions into account.
  • PlugShare: Thanks to user reviews, it gives an instant answer to the question of station failures.
  • Google Maps: Offers charging station locations, density, and occupancy rate display.
  • Yandex Maps: Widely used in Turkey; preferred for real-time traffic and road conditions.
  • Apple Maps: Considers the vehicle's charge status and range; has Siri integration.
  • Charging@TR (EPDK): The official app; shows station locations, occupancy rates, and usage status across Turkey — the most institutionally reliable local source.

There is also the vehicle's own navigation: many electric vehicles offer automatic charging break planning based on battery level. But keep the warning in mind — don't rely on a single app; navigation may not always provide up-to-date occupancy information. Cross-checking from two different sources before setting a route should become a habit.

Which charging network is strong where?

When planning your route, knowing the networks' distribution along the highway makes your job easier. Trugois the strongest player on the highway: it offers at least 180 kW at all its units; it goes up to 300 kW at critical points on the Bolu, Bursa, and Istanbul–Izmir highways. Eşarj has the highest peak power (units up to 360 kW) and is strong at rest stops and shopping mall parking lots. ZES has the widest coverage; while it mainly operates at 60–120 kW within the city, it is increasing its units above 180 kW on the highway. Tesla Supercharger delivers power up to 250 kW, and the majority of its stations are open to non-Tesla vehicles.

The ideal scenario is stops where multiple networks intersect at the same point. The Susurluk rest stop (~220. km) on the Istanbul–Izmir highway is cited as an example in this respect: Tesla Supercharger, Trugo, and Eşarj units above 180 kW are all in the same place. When planning your route, marking such "golden stops" in advance also reduces the risk of a single network failing.

Winter and summer: buffer range calculation

In summer, your route works as it is; in winter, it does not. In cold weather, heating systems consume extra power, and according to MODPARK's 2026 cold weather tests, the battery loses between 20% and 50% of its range in winter. Even in 2026 model vehicles with heat pumps, the gauge should not be trusted. Adding one stop to your winter plan and shortening the stages is the safest approach.

There is one more winter-specific critical detail: when heading to a DC station, select the destination from the navigation. The vehicle pre-heats the battery (pre-conditioning); in a vehicle that arrives unheated, almost no energy is added during the first half hour of the charging session. So the same stop, with a heated battery, gets the job done in one-third the time.

In summer the picture is more generous, but speed is still decisive. ChargeMate recommends staying at 120 km/h; speeds above 130 km/h noticeably reduce range. MODPARK goes one step further and advocates 110 km/h: it extends arrival time by only 15–20 minutes while preserving 15–20% of the range. Although the two sources disagree on the threshold, the basic principle is the same: as speed increases, range decreases. Regenerative braking and one-pedal driving gain energy, especially on downhill slopes; roof racks and a full trunk reduce range.

Peak periods and Plan B: don't be in the queue, stop where you can see it

Charging queues at highway rest stops were filmed during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday. According to ChargeMate's analysis, the source of the problem is not a lack of infrastructure but congestion: within the same time slot, more vehicles than capacity head to specific stations. This is a problem that can be overcome with individual planning.

  1. Set off with a 100% full battery. By placing your first stop 100 kilometers further, you skip the busiest first stop. (If you will drive off immediately, charging to 100% is not harmful; what is harmful is leaving the car parked at 100% for a long time.)
  2. Choose a smaller point 30 km before or after the popular stop. Passing right by the facility everyone heads to saves you from the queue.
  3. Check occupancy before setting off. Seeing the queue is better than waiting in it.
  4. Designate a backup station. Against a faulty or crowded station, mark the nearest alternative on your route in advance.

Aligning charging with breaks you would take anyway is also part of the strategy: a meal, coffee, and restroom break takes 25-30 minutes — almost the same as charging time from 20% to 80%. Splitting the journey into 150-200 kilometer stages and not running the battery down to the last of its range is the most comfortable rhythm for both driver and battery.

Checklist for your first long trip

  • Count 75% of the WLTP range, and 60% of that, as usable; plan 180 km per stop for a 400 km range.
  • Split the route into 150-200 km stages; cross-check with at least two route apps.
  • Designate a backup station for each stop; if possible, choose points where multiple networks meet.
  • Set off at 100% charge and push the first stop forward so you skip the first busy stop.
  • If heading out in winter, add a stop and preheat the battery by selecting the DC target from the vehicle's navigation.
  • Aim for a steady speed of around 120 km/h; don't forget the range cost of speed.
  • Check station occupancy before setting off; don't waste time on AC charging on the highway.

To sum up: for journeys over 500 kilometers, if you account from the start for 2-3 stops and a total of 1.5-2.5 hours of extra time, a long trip in an electric vehicle ceases to be something to fear and turns into a journey of well-timed breaks.
