Home Charging Station Installation: A Guide to Costs and Process

The electric vehicle is waiting in the home garage, connected to the wall-mounted charging station.

Charging your electric vehicle from a standard outlet works, but it is a slow and risky solution. A wall-mounted wallbox, on the other hand, provides Mode 3 AC charging, continuously monitors the current, protects against leakage current, and enables remote management. Even so, installation is not just about buying a device and having it mounted on the wall; it covers interconnected steps such as electrical wiring, power selection, apartment building permissions, and budget planning. As of 2026, this guide walks through the operational and financial side of the process step by step.

Power Selection: 7.4 kW, 11 kW, or 22 kW?

Power selection directly determines both your budget and your daily usage. Standard residential contract power is usually around 5-8 kW; with a 7.4-11 kW wallbox, running an oven or air conditioner at the same time can trip the breakers. That is why your home's infrastructure matters as much as the device's power.

  • 7.4 kW (single-phase, 220V): The limit value (32 A) for the vast majority of apartment units. It adds roughly 35-40 km of range per hour and is the most economical solution.
  • 11 kW (three-phase, 380V): The most preferred class in Türkiye. Many vehicles on the market have onboard chargers (OBC) that support this level; for most passenger cars, a full charge in 6-8 hours makes it the optimal option.
  • 22 kW (three-phase): The highest power in home charging, but the ceiling is set by the vehicle's OBC. Since the Togg T10X, Tesla Model Y, and Hyundai Ioniq 5 mostly come with an 11 kW OBC, even if you install a 22 kW device, the vehicle will draw 11 kW.

Three-phase connection is required for 11-22 kW. If your existing connection is insufficient, you need to apply to the distribution company for a power upgrade; in 2026 this can be done through digital channels and takes an average of 15-30 days. Also do not forget the cable cross-section: as the distance between the panel and the device increases, the cable must get thicker. A minimum of 3x6 mm² for single-phase and 5x6 mm² halogen-free copper cable is recommended for three-phase.

Permissions and the Legal Process: Installing in an Apartment Building

The permission requirement varies depending on your installation scenario. If you have an assigned parking space registered in the title deed and the installation is done without touching the shared infrastructure, a board decision is generally not required. If the use of shared lines is involved, things get more complicated: installing a MID-approved filter meter, recording the decision in the board of directors' minutes, and obtaining the distribution company's positive opinion are recommended.

There is a contradiction among sources regarding majority requirements for fixed installations in shared parking lots. On the one hand, it is stated that under KMK Article 19, four-fifths written consent is required and that if the process is carried out with 51%, the device could be removed; on the other hand, it is reported that under a Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change circular, charging units are considered a "beneficial improvement" and under KMK Article 42 a simple majority becomes sufficient. It is worth verifying the current legislation before starting the installation.

Another important distinction is on the EPDK side: no license is required for your own use; however, if you want to provide charging services to third parties for a fee, a Charging Network Operation License is mandatory.

Safety: The Non-Negotiable Requirements of Installation

The most critical point is the residual current device (RCD) type. Standard AC/A type RCDs cannot detect DC leakage from the battery into the grid and become blind; therefore, a B type or an A-EV type RCD with integrated DC 6 mA protection must be used. On the fuse side, C type fuses provide thermal protection. Before installation, a grounding measurement with a megger device is essential; reliable wallboxes will not start charging at all if the grounding resistance is high.

Having the installation done by an authorized electrical engineer or a certified technician protects both the warranty and insurance coverage. DIY installation could mean serious costs in the event of a problem.

Another source states that a 7.4 kW turnkey installation starts from 35,000 TL, and that compared to 11 kW, the device price difference for 22 kW is 10,000-20,000 TL. You may need to set aside 5,000-10,000 TL for bureaucracy, engineering projects, and fees. If common area installation, a three-phase transition, and long cable distances come together, the total cost can reach up to 100,000-150,000 TL. Notable brands include Vestel, Togg Wallbox, Webasto, and ABB. Physical installation takes 2-4 hours if the infrastructure is ready; including survey and permitting processes, it ranges from a few days to a few weeks.

Tariffs, Savings, and Payback

Under the residential single-time tariff (as of June 17, 2026), approximately 3.24 TL/kWh is paid for the first 240 kWh, and approximately 4.86 TL/kWh above that; under the three-time tariff, the night period (22:00-06:00) is approximately 50-60% cheaper than daytime. AC charging at home provides approximately 60-70% savings per kWh compared to DC fast charging.

Payback estimates vary over a wide range depending on assumptions. A calculation comparing a vehicle driving 1,500 km per month consuming 17 kWh per 100 km with a gasoline car consuming 7 liters per 100 km (gasoline at approximately 63 TL per liter) finds a difference exceeding 5,500 TL per month, and states that a 35,000-50,000 TL installation pays for itself in 6-9 months, with this period shortened by the night tariff. More conservative estimates give 1.5-2 years for someone driving 20,000 km per year, and 1-2 years for someone driving 12,000-15,000 km per year; the difference stems from km and tariff assumptions.

Another practical feature: dynamic load balancing. By automatically reducing the wallbox's power while the oven or air conditioner is running, it prevents the main fuse from tripping; a particularly valuable feature in apartments with limited contracted power.

  • Can it be installed in an apartment building? Yes, if you have an assigned parking space; in common areas, a majority decision is required (pay attention to the legislative contradiction mentioned above).
  • Is 22 kW always better? No. If your car's OBC is 11 kW, the difference goes to waste.
