The Church of Santa Engrácia and The National Pantheon

  • Landmarks & Monuments

Walking through the charming streets of our Graça neighborhood, imagine the Church of Santa Engrácia rising as a true testament to the grandeur of 17th-century Portugal. Although originally designed as a church, it has elegantly transformed into a sacred sanctuary where prominent figures of Portuguese history find their eternal resting place. And if that were not captivating enough, by sharing its enchanting surroundings with the iconic São Vicente de Fora Monastery, it creates a fascinating mosaic of history and culture that fuels my passion to share this experience with fellow travelers. Join me as I uncover the stories hidden within these venerable walls and wander through the cobblestone streets of Graça. Vamos nessa!

The current structure, replacing the earlier churches dedicated to the martyr Saint Engratia, emerged in 1568 under the patronage of the Portuguese Infanta Maria, Duchess of Viseu. After the previous structures collapsed, construction of the existing church began in 1681. The renowned architect João Antunes, a leading name in Portuguese Baroque architecture, brought this innovative design to life.

Construction lasted from 1682 to 1712, but the architect's death in the said year led King John V to shift his attention and resources to the colossal Mafra Monastery. As a result, the church remained unfinished for centuries, and "obras de Santa Engrácia" became a Portuguese idiom meaning a never-ending construction project. Eventually, a dome was added, and the church was finally reopened in 1966.
